The Northeast Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing access to primary healthcare and contributing toward the quality of health for people in our region, especially in rural and medically underserved areas.
Northeast PA AHEC serves a nine county region: Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming.
Our programs focus on Healthcare Workforce Development and Community Health Education. Our Healthcare Workforce Development efforts aim to improve the supply, distribution, retention, quality and efficiency of all health professionals. We seek to reach this goal through recruiting, training and retaining healthcare professionals in our region. Our Community Health Education efforts bring awareness of pertinent health issues to people in our region. We evaluate public health needs of our communities and provide educational programs for children and adults in response to those needs.
The Area Health Education Center works with all health professions schools and programs. Each AHEC in Pennsylvania has a sponsoring medical school that has made a special commitment to the support of the Pennsylvania Area Health Education Centers. Our sponsoring medical school for the Eastcentral Region is Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) based in Philadelphia and for the Northeast Region is Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GSCOM) based in Scranton.
Funding for the Area Health Education Center is provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The Commonwealth's medical community and communities at large provide additional support.
